About Fasih Ahmed:

Fasih Ahmed, a native-born Pakistani and a Muslim, has been living in the United States for the last 30 years. He received his doctorate in sociology from the University of Chicago in 1976 and is currently a professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at NC A&T State University. Dr. Ahmed has served in the United Nations as consultant to the government of Pakistan and as United Nations adviser to the Ministry of Planning, Government of PDR Yemen. Locally, Dr. Ahmed is the past chair of the Board of Directors of the Piedmont Interfaith Council.

      

Islam: History, Traditions, and Practices

 

Islam is an ancient and complex religion practiced by more than a billion people throughout the world. In our ever expanding global society, a greater understanding of all faiths is essential. In this program, Dr. Fasih Ahmed discusses the basic theological concepts of Islam—sources of guidance for human conduct, morality, and principles of worship. In addition, he provides information on the different sects of Islam, Shia, Sunni, Wahabi, and Sufis, their similarities, differences, and universally accepted tenets and practices.

US Foreign Policy Implications in Islamic Countries

In this program, Dr. Fasih Ahmed describes the demographics, geography, and cultures of Islamic societies and analyzes the diverse political and social systems in Muslim countries. He also presents a brief history of US relations with selected Muslim countries during and after the Cold War, as well as analyzes the impact and implications of current US policies, including the initiatives of the war on terrorism.
