Greensboro, NC Dr. Ahmed, a native-born Pakistani and a Muslim, has been living in the United States for the last 30 years. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 1976 and is currently a professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at NC A&T State University. Dr. Ahmed has served in the United Nations in several capacities as Consultant to the Government of Pakistan and as United Nations Advisor to the Ministry of Planning, Government of PDR Yemen. Locally, Dr. Ahmed is the past chair of the Board of Directors of the Piedmont Interfaith Council. |
Islam: History, Traditions, and Practices (new)
Islam is an ancient and complex religion practiced by more than a billion people throughout the world. In our ever expanding global society, a greater understanding of all faiths is essential. In this program, Dr. Fasih Ahmed discusses the basic theological concepts of Islam—sources of guidance for human conduct, morality, and principles of worship. In addition, he provides information on the different sects of Islam, Shia, Sunni, Wahabi, and Sufis, their similarities, differences, and universally accepted tenets and practices. Program requirements: lectern, microphone, carousel projector with remote control, screen US Foreign Policy Implications in Islamic CountriesIn this presentation Dr. Ahmed will discuss a demographic, geographic and cultural description of Islamic societies and will analyze the diversity of political and social systems in Muslim countries. A brief history of US relations with selected Muslim countries, during and after the cold -war, will be presented as well as an analysis of the impact and implications of current US policies, including the initiatives of war on terrorism. Interactions of Islam with Political, Social, and Economic SystemsIslam is practiced as a complete guide for human conduct by about one and a half billion Muslims around the world. As an organized religion, Islam furnishes the moral foundations of social, political, and economic systems in Islamic societies. Dr. Ahmed will address the analytic complexity of the impact of Islam on the behavior of Muslims, given the vast cultural diversity among Islamic Societies, as expressed politically, socially, and economically.
