Dr. John Chasteen is an Associate Professor of History at UNC Chapel Hill, teaching classes in the history of Brazil and Latin American social and cultural history. He received his Ph.D. at UNC Chapel Hill and has served as Chair of the Editorial Committee of the Duke-UNC program in Latin American Studies and as Associate Director of the UNC Institute of Latin American Studies. Dr. Chasteen's most recent publication, Born in Blood and Fire: A Concise History of Latin America, was published by W.W. Norton in 2000.

Salsa, Samba, Tango: The History of Dancing in Latin America
Dr. Chasteen presents an introduction to three of Latin America's internationally famous social dances. He offers information on colonial origins of the dances, their subsequent development as informal symbols of national identity, and their eventual importation to the United States.
