Choices and Change (new)
The film Choices and Change offers a gripping portrait of the
challenges faced by students and staff at A New Day, a juvenile
justice program serving middle school students in Durham, NC. It
makes a compelling case for supporting community alternatives in
our juvenile justice system and touches upon many of the social,
economic, and institutional forces impacting young people at risk
of delinquency and school failure. The film emerged from youth video
workshops filmmaker Kenny Dalsheimer taught at A New Day. During
his time at this program, Dalsheimer began exploring juvenile justice
issues and invited his students to produce their own video and photographs
for the film. Choices And Change conveys a message of hope through
its thoughtful use of student material and the keen insights offered
by adults working with our most at-risk youth. This unique film
and discussion program offers opportunities for community groups
to explore concrete ways to help children in their own communities.
