Even Exchange Dance Theater is a collaborative modern dance company based in Raleigh, NC. The company has created a body of work that is honest in its intent and pertinent to common life. Themes include roles of spirituality, fast-paced modern life, women's roles, teen-age memories, gender stereotypes, and strength in life experiences. The EEDT's mission statement emphasizes the commitment to collaborative art making and to the exchange of information and ideas with other artists, audiences, and communities. Company members have extensive teaching experience with a broad range of students including disadvantaged, disabled, elderly, and inmate populations.

Innovation Through Collaboration*

In this workshop, Even Exchange company members share the collaborative process that they use to create artistic work. In a comfortable environment, participants are given skills and vocabulary to contribute ideas. Questions and prompts inspire writings and dialogue from personal experience. These words, thoughts, and stories are translated to movement as dancers listen and watch. Discussion of choreographic methods enables groups to craft movement and words into artistic work that is shared in informal performances. "Time outs" are taken along the way to identify the steps in the collaborative process. Company members then lead a discussion of what just happened, what it means, and how we take it into our everyday lives.

The Art of Interpretation*

Expressive movement offers a unique opportunity to communicate not only through words but also through the universal language of dance. Whether the work is on a theme determined by the company or by the audience, company members bring a wide range of choreographic tools and creative methods to the subject. Diversity and personal experience enrich the presentation of ideas. This workshop involves the discussion of ideas, creation of individual and group phrases, crafting of movement and text, presentation of product, and follow-up discussion.

*Audience members do not have to have a background in dance--nor flexible backs or knees--to participate fully in this workshop!
