The Hero's Journey: Mythic Lessons for the Twenty-First Century

Many people today question the importance of the individual, believing that a time of heroes is in the past and has no place in our post-modern age. Dr. Leach discusses mythic heroes of the past, showing how they overcame difficulties remarkably similar, in many ways, to the challenges of today. These mythic journeys enable us to see the parallels with our journey through life as we gain inspiration and guidance from the mythic heroes and heroines of the past.

Mythic Patterns in Modern Literature

Recent scholarship has examined underlying patterns in the behavior of mythical characters, which are similar for everyone. These patterns, called archetypes, reveal the structures of our motivation and action. Dr. Leach will discuss some of these prominent archetypes and show how they enable us to understand key elements in myth and literature.
