Music Criticism
Ever disagree with a critic? What is good criticism? What is the purpose of concert reviews? How does one reviewer determine a good performance? What qualifications should one have to review performance? Do reviewers and critics mold public opinion? This presentation looks historically at some of the critics of the past and the important issues of the day in classical music. Dr. Lindeman, a reviewer for more than a decade, asks participants to try their own hand a reviewing recordings.
Music and the Visual Arts: Mirrors of Society
What does art say about the culture in which it is made? What insights into society do musicians and painters reveal? Dr. Lindeman's presentation explores the interrelationships between music, painting, and sculpture of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the society from which they come. He calls on participants to recognize stylistic traits in movements, such as classicism, romanticism, and nationalism, by using sound recording and slides. Dr. Lindeman also looks at the art of today--where we are and how we got there.
