The Divided Mind of Civil War North Carolina

Confederate North Carolina was a complex and contradictory place. Among the last to secede, the state ultimately provided more soldiers than any other to the Confederate Army. Governor Zebulon Vance was an outspoken proponent of secession but constantly battled the central government over issues of states' rights and faced various degrees of Unionism within his own state. In this presentation, Dr. Starnes explores the complex way North Carolinians from all stations of society viewed the Civil War and examines the roots of these divisions.

Natives, Newcomers, and Summer People: Tourism, History, and Culture in North Carolina

With a breathtaking coastline, majestic mountains, and famous Piedmont resorts, it is no wonder that tourism is one of the most important segments of North Carolina's economy. In fact, tourism has become more than a mode of economic development, and is now an important force in shaping local culture. This presentation examines the history of tourism in North Carolina, the role of tourism and tourists in shaping the state's history and culture, and the broader social and economic implications of a tourism economy.
